Abercrombie & Fitch, Singapore (27 July 2017)
Abercrombie & Fitch (GPS: 1.30299, 103.83623) is an upscale American clothing outlet. The store along Orchard Road opened in 2012. It specialises in men's casual clothing.
Originally established in Manhattan, New York City, in 1892 as an outfitter of sporting goods, it went bankrupt in 1976, but was resurrected two years later, when Houston-based Oshman's Sporting Goods bought over the name and mailing list, and relaunched it as a mail-order retailer. The company changed hands again in 1988. Under new ownership, the company shifted its focus to the young adult market. In the late 1990s and turn of the 20th century, the company became associated with its risque advertisements. Between 1997 and 2003, the company published a magazine called A&F Quarterly, which contains controversial photographs and articles. At the same time, it was building its brand as a near-luxury name.
The Great Recession in the early 2010s badly affected the company, and this is reflected in its stock prices, which has been on a general decline since 2011. Factors contributing to this decline have been attributed to young adults switching to lower-priced fashion brands. The emergence of Forever 21 and H&M also affected its position.
