Do you know what are the ten biggest hotels in Penang? This is something that stirs my curiosity, so I look for the answer. Before I give you the answer, see if you can make a guess, and see how many you can get right.
Hotel Equatorial
According to Agoda, Hotel Equatorial with 662 rooms is the biggest in Penang. Built in 1989, this 12-storey hotel is perched on a hillock at Bukit Jambul overlooking Bayan Baru and Bayan Lepas.
Cititel Penang
Taking the number two spot, with 451 rooms, is this, the biggest city hotel in George Town. This 16-storey 4-star hotel opened in 1997, and is located on Penang Road.
Hotel Jen Penang
The third spot is also another city hotel. Hotel Jen was originally known as Shangri-la Penang when it opened in 1986. Then it became known as Traders Hotel, and late last year was again renamed to Hotel Jen Penang. It has 443 rooms.
Vistana Penang Bukit Jambul
The fourth biggest hotel in Penang is on the southern part of the island. With 419 rooms, this 4-star hotel is second in size only to Hotel Equatorial in the area.
The Wembley - St Giles Premier Hotel
As I write this, the hotel has not yet opened its doors to guest, but when it does, it will be the fifth largest in Penang, with 415 rooms.
Golden Sands Resorts by Shangri-La
The sixth spot is taken by the biggest hotel in the Batu Ferringhi beach belt. (I had almost expected the honour to go to its sister hotel next door, but again, the measurement here is number of rooms rather than area.) Golden Sands first opened in 1981. It has 387 rooms.
Evergreen Laurel Hotel
According to Agoda, Evergreen Laurel has 368 rooms, making it the biggest hotel along Gurney Drive. The 5-star hotel opened in 1997.
Bayview Beach Resort
The eighth place returns us to Batu Ferringhi. Agoda does not mention when this 360-room 4-star hotel first opened, but I do remember it from the time I was small, so it must have been around for a while.
Bayview Hotel Georgetown
Another hotel of the Bayview chain takes the ninth spot. I remember that this city hotel was originally known as The Merlin. Again, Agoda doesn't say when it first opened (which I believe is a long time ago, as it has been around since I was small), but states that it has 333 rooms.)
Rainbow Paradise Beach Resort
Rounding up the top ten, and in fact sharing the ninth spot with Bayview Hotel Georgetown, is the 4-star Rainbow Paradise, the biggest hotel in Tanjung Bungah. It too has 333 rooms.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
