Front façade of 1881 Chong Tian Hotel (20 May 2012)
1881 Chong Tian Hotel (GPS: 5.417818, 100.334804) is a now closed Chinese-style boutique hotel along
Jalan Pintal Tali in
George Town, Penang. It occupies a row of restored three-storey shophouses that were built in the 1880s, when Larut tin mining brought much-awaited prosperity to George Town, enabling some of the first three-storey shophouses to be built.
The development of Rope Walk in the 1880s coincided with the influx of
Hakkas and
Cantonese into George Town. It was also around this period, or a short while later, that the Cantonese district associations such as
Ng Fook Thong began to occupy part of George Town which until then were Indian and Indian Muslim settlements.

The inscription of
George Town as a World Heritage Site has generated attention to George Town, and this is reflected in the restoration of the Chong Tian Hotel, which until recently was one of a row of dilapidated pre-war buildings. The restoration effort has now completely spruced it up, turning it into a luxurious hotel in the Chinatown part of the city.
