19 China Street, George Town, Penang (15 September 2012)
19 China Street (GPS: 5.41687, 100.34084) is a three-storey shophouse in
George Town, Penang. It dates back to the mid-19th century. It was built with a full length of timber shutters or jalousies across the second and third floors. The spandrel on the second floor bears the company inscription while that on the third floor is plain.
The front façade of 19 China Street was resurfaced with Shanghai plaster in the early 20th century, but was painted over more recently. Part of the surfacing has peeled off to reveal bare bricks underneath. The gable spots a stucco ornamentation in
bas-relief. The third floor has a pair of full-length windows comprising jalousies and lower panels. When I viewed the building in Oct 2012, it was fenced up and may possibly undergo restoration in the near future.
