23 Love Lane, George Town, Penang (5 August 2012)
23 Love Lane (GPS: 5.419799, 100.337121) is a boutique hotel housed in an
Anglo-Indian bungalow in
George Town, Penang. It is located within the core zone of the
George Town World Heritage Site, on the boundary from the buffer zone.
The two-storey building faces
Love Lane to the west. Surrounded by a compound, the structure is believed to have been erected after 1877, according to studies done on a survey map of that period. 23 Love Lane is entered through a Chinese gate that is believed to have been built before 1891, as it appears on the Kelly's Survey map of 1891-96.
In 2007, 23 Love Lane was purchased by its present owner who also bought four Straits Eclectic shophouses facing Stewart Lane. At that time, the property was in a state of disrepair. The buildings underwent restoration from 2009 until 2011, and opened as a boutique hotel establishment at the end of 2011.
