Acheen Street Ghaut, towards Beach Street (22 May 2011)
Acheen Street Ghaut (; Malay: Gat Lebuh Acheh; Penang Hokkien: Kuan3lau3 Lor33thau2 ) is the extension of Acheen Street following land reclamation of the late 19th century. It runs from Beach Street to Weld Quay. Along the way it is intersected by Victoria Street.
20 May, 2017: Traffic direction on Acheen Street Ghaut has been revamped to flow from Beach Street and Weld Quay towards Victoria Street.
Late 18th Century
Acheen Street Ghaut does not exist yet. Beach Street was an unpaved road running along the shore. Tengku Syed Hussain, the leader of the Acehnese community, had his four-storey warehouse, Gudang Acheh at the junction of Acheen Street and Beach Street.
Mid 19th Century
Stone steps, or "ghaut", once led down from water's edge, allowing cargo to be offloaded from the ships. Warehouses are located at Beach Street and Acheen Street.
Turn of the 20th Century
Land reclamation (1880-1904) extended shoreline outwards. Stone steps at the end of Acheen Street replaced by a new extended road, called Acheen Street Ghaut, bisected by another new road, Victoria Street, and ends at Weld Quay. Jetties extend from Weld Quay house dock workers grouped by clans.

In Other Words ...
Acheen Street Ghaut is known in Hokkien as Kuan3lau3 Lor33thau2 meaning "Tall House Junction". This refers of course to Gudang Acheh. It is also called Phak1 Ciok1 Kay1 Lor3 Thau2 (Traditional Chinese: 打石街路頭, Simplified Chinese: 打石街路头), meaning "Stonemasonry Junction".

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
