Jalalabad (جلال آباد) is a city in eastern Afghanistan formerly known as Adinapour. It is located in Nangarhar Province, about 95 miles (153 km) to the east of Kabul, and is the largest city in eastern Afghanistan. Jalalabad has a population of around 206,000 (2011 estimate). It follows the Afghanistan Standard Time, which is 4:30 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+4:30).

As with most of the major cities in Afghanistan, Jalalabad has a history going back hundreds of years. It has been recorded as early as AD 630 when Xuan Zang, a famous Chinese Buddhist monk, paid it a visit. It was a center for Greco-Buddhist culture until the 7th century, when it was conquered by Muslim Arabs.

In recent centuries, Jalalabad has been a battleground, in the First Anglo-Afghan War in 1842, in the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878, and in the many conflicts of the 20th century. Today it is rebuilt by NATO and the United Nations. The city is still very much a military area, with the US army maintaining a strong presence.
