Tassili n'Ajjer (GPS: 25.81318, 8.13453) is a World Heritage Site in Algeria. It is famous for being one of the best representations of prehistoric cave art in the world.
What to See in Tassili n'Ajjer
There are about 15,000 cave drawings and etchings. They depict animal migrations and human life. The cave paintings have been done between 6000 BC and the 1st century AD. The paintings from different periods exhibit varying characteristics and stylistic differences. In addition to the cave paintings, Tassili n'Ajjer also has outstanding landscape in the form of rock formations. There are 300 natural rock arches in the area formed by eroded sandstones.
Location of Tassili n'Ajjer
Tassili n'Ajjer is a mountain range in the Sahara desert. It is on the southeast part of Algeria. The nearest town is Djanet, which is about 10 km to the southwest. The area where Tassili n'Ajjer is situated had a different climate during the prehistoric period when the rock paintings were done. There was regular rainfall and vegetation.
