Timgad (GPS: 35.4851, 6.46399) is a former Roman colonial town. It was established by the Emperor Trajan in 100 AD. The emperor named it Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi. Timgad is today a World Heritage Site in Algeria.

What to See in Timgad

Timgad is one of the best example of Roman town planning using the grid plan system. It was planned and built out of scratch (ex nihilo) to be a military colony, in defence of Roman territories in North Africa against the Berbers.

Ruins of the Roman colony is still visible in Timgad. This includes Corinthian colonnades, a triumphal arch called Trajan's Arch, and a forum. There is a 3500-seat theater that is good enough to still be used today. Also visible include the Roman public bath, market, library and basilica. The Capitoline Temple in Timgad, dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter, is about the same size as the Pantheon in Rome.

Location of Timgad

Timgad is located in the province of Batna.
