The Comoros is an archipelago island nation off the east coast of Africa. Officially known as the Union of the Comoros (Union des Comores), it is located on the northern part of the Mozambique Channel, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. The Comoros covers 1,660 sq km (640 sq mi). It is the third smallest country in Africa by area.

The Comoros has a population of approximately 800,000 (2011 estimate), making it one of the most densely populated country in Africa. The capital and largest city is Moroni. The country enjoys a nominal GDP of US$532 million and a per capita nominal GDP of US$798 (both 2009 estimates).

Most of the population of the Comoros are Muslims, the result of Arab influence and trade. It was made a French colony in 1912 and gained its independence in 1978. The post-independence years were one of political turmoil. Even in recent years, the political landscape of the Comoros continues to be turbulent. The country has experienced over 20 coups and attempted coups since independence.

The Comoros comprises four main islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli), Nzwani (Anjouan), and Maore (Mayotte). The capital, Moroni, is on Grand Comore. The country experiences a tropical marine climate. The dry season is from May to November, when temperature may drop to 19°C (66°F). The wet season also includes the warmest months, with average temperature reaching 30°C (86°F) in March.

Getting around in the Comoros

The most practical way to move about is to rent a car. This will cost you roughly €30 (KMF 15,000) per day. There are no public buses.
