The
Giza Plateau is a plateau in Giza, Egypt, famous for being the site of the Great Pyramids. The pyramids are within an archaeological site known as the Giza Necropolis. It is about 9 km from the old town of Giza and 25 km from the city centre of Cairo.
The main attraction of the Giza Plateau is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is also called the Pyramid of Cheops or Pyramid of Khufu. This is the largest of all the pyramids in Egypt. Next to it, on the southwest side, is the Pyramid of Khafre, also called the Pyramid of Chephren. Another few hundred meters to the southwest lies the Pyramid of Menkaure, also called the Pyramid of Mykerinos, the smallest of the three great pyramids.

Located to the east of the Pyramid of Khafre is the Great Sphinx of Giza. Measuring 73.5 meters (241 feet) in length, it is the largest statue in the world to be carved from a single piece of rock. The image on the Sphinx is believed to be that of the Pharaoh Khafre. In addition to the three large pyramids are a number of smaller pyramids, called the queens pyramids. Also within the complex are causeways and valley pyramids.
