Saint Catherine Area describes the location of the Orthodox Monastery of St Catherine, which is on the foot of Mount Sinai. This was where, according to the Old Testament, Moses received the Tablets of the Law.

The Saint Catherine Area is sacred to three religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The Orthodox Monastery of St Catherine was founded here in the 6th century. It is the oldest Christian monastery still functioning in the world. The monastery was erected in the Byzantine style, and has an impressive collection of Christian manuscripts and icons. It is perched against a rugged terrain where there are numerous archaeological and religious sites and monuments.

Saint Catherine Area was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 26th session of the World Heritage Committee which was held in Budapest, Hungary, on 24-29 June, 2002.

Visiting Saint Catherine Area

It is best that you make arrangements with a tour operator. Tourists arrive by road. They get there from Dahab (2 hours/150 km away), Sham el-Sheikh or Nuweiba (both 3 hours away). You would need a Sinai pass for visiting the places in Sinai.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
