Despite Guinea being a mineral rich country, due to poor management, it is today one of the poorest in the world, with most of its people living as farmers. The 2009 nominal GDP for Guinea stood at $4.394 billion, equivalent to a per capita nominal GDP of just $414. Its per capita nominal GDP at purchasing power parity is only $991.
Guinea was a colony of France from the 1890's until its independence on 2 October, 1958. Although a round of presidential election took place on 27 June, 2010, it is still too early to tell whether it heralds a change for the better for Guinea.
Planning your visit to Guinea
All visitors to Guinea must have a visa in hand when they arrive. This has to be made at a Guinea embassy outside the country. There are flights by Air France from Paris to Conakry.
Guinea ratified the World Heritage Convention on 18 March, 1979. As of August 2010, it has only one World Heritage Sites, which is in the natural category, and in partnership with Côte d'Ivoire. That property is also on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Guinea also has another three sites on the World Heritage Tentative List.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
