Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its 2010 estimated nominal GDP stood at just $977 million, equivalent to a per capita nominal GDP of only $227. Its per capita GDP at purchasing power parity stood at only $396.

As its name suggest, Liberia was founded by liberated American slaves through the work of the American Colonization Society between 1821 and 1822. The country was created in the hope that the former slaves would have the freedom and equiality in running their own country. Hence, the former slaves were sent to Liberia instead of returning them to their homeland.

The Republic of Liberia was founded in 1847. Its capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, and its flag is also based on the American flag.

Unlike its American model, however, the history of Liberian politics is closer to that of its African neighbors. The country has been rocked by numerous military coups and harsh authoritarian rule. Liberia appears finally to have embarked on the road to peace and order with the 2005 elections, when Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the only elected female head of state in Africa. A graduate from Harvar'd John F. Kennedy School of Government, Sirleaf is Liberia's hope in moving forward.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
