Hwange is a town in the province of Matabeleland North, on the western part of Zimbabwe. It has a population of around 45,000 people (2012 estimate). The town was originally called Wankie, after the Wankie Coal Field, which was one of the largest coal mines in the world.

Hwange still produces vast amounts of coal which is distributed throughout the country by rail. The town has also developed its tourism industry. It is home to Hwange National Park, the largest national park in Zimbabwe. It is rich in wildlife that includes elephants, giraffes and lions.
