After learning that Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee has moved to Carnarvon Street on 31 March, 2016, my wife and I planned our visit the following Saturday, 2 April, 2016. We arrived at 8:30 am in the morning, right after our usual trip to the market (Saturday morning is market day for us).
Ah Soon Kor attending to a customer (2 April 2016)
There were quite a few tables already occupied, and throughout the course of our meal, we saw that Ah Soon Kor has a steady stream of customers. Since we first discovered the Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee a few years ago, he has moved twice. His original location, when we discovered him, was at the Sin Kim Sun Coffee Centre on Macalister Road. From there, he moved to occupy a shophouse on Perak Road. That was a year ago. That location was probably not suitable to his business, so a year later, he has moved again.
In comparison to Sin Kim Sun on Macalister Road, we found his present coffee shop rather dingy and airless. This is highly attributed to his painting the ceiling timber a dark brown. He installed a number of ceiling and wall fans to provide ventilation, but it was still a bit warm inside. We felt that had he painted the ceiling white, used round coffee shop tables, and normal florescent tubes, it would give the place a brighter, more "coffee shop" appearance. The rectangular wooden table can probably fit more into the space than the round tables, hence the choice. But it makes the place look dark.
The Hokkien Mee at Ah Soon Kor (2 April 2016)
After a short wait of about five or ten minutes, we received our orders. This being the Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee, and me being me, my bowl has large pieces of spare ribs and sio bak. There's also boiled eggs, sliced shrimps and mantis prawns. But I noticed that the mantis prawns were fewer than usual. Just as we were about to partake of our meal, our Facebook friend Lucia Lai arrived. We have planned to meet there. This time, Lucia ordered the Lor Mee (she had tried the Hokkien Mee on her first visit on Thursday).
Here I am with Lucia Lai at Ah Soon Kor Har Mee Stall (2 April 2016)
My wife enjoying the Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee (2 April 2016)
Lucia found the Lor Mee to be very salty as well as watery. (I have not tried the lor mee at Ah Soon Kor, my favourite lor mee is at Jelutong Market.) My wife likewise also found the Hokkien mee to be rather salty, but I myself thought it tasted fine. As a matter of fact, I have taken Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee before and it was even saltier when it was selling at Perak Road. I had planned on telling him that his Hokkien Mee was rather salty, but considering I did not find today's Hokkien Mee as salty as I had expected it to be, that warrants a change of plans. Nevertheless, we roped in Ah Soon Kor as soon as he was free, so that we could provide him our feedback that his Hokkien mee tends to be rather salty.
On the whole, I liked his Hokkien Mee best when it was at Sin Kim Sun Coffee Centre. (Alas, the drinks were also the most expensive there.) After he moved his stall to Perak Road, his mother took over his stall there for a while, but she has since decided to retire from selling.
