Aik Chee Reading Club (14 January 2015)
Aik Chee Reading Club was a reading club founded in 1911 by the Hainanese supporters of Sun Yat Sen. It was housed at 48 Muntri Street. In the first half of the 20th century, Muntri Street had become an enclave for Hainanese settlers in Penang, anchored by the location of the
Hainanese Temple.
The Aik Chee Reading Club acted as a front to promote revolutionary ideas. The founding of this reading club led to the establishment of
Aik Hua School, initially with night classes being conducted in 1913. Later on, the school began to offer day classes when its student increased. The school moved to a new location a short distance away, occupying the Hainan Association building in 1919.
