Air Itam War Memorial Park (3 December 2012)
Air Itam War Memorial Park (GPS: 5.40566, 100.28276) is a small park off the
Air Itam Roundabout, in Air Itam, Penang. It was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng, at 11:00 am on
11 November, 2011, the 60th anniversary of the original unveiling of the
Overseas Chinese Anti-War Memorial, the main feature of the park.
In addition to the Overseas Chinese Anti-War Memorial, the memorial park also includes the World Peace Memorial, the Penang Chinese Relief Memorial and the Memorial Park Mural. The World Peace Memorial is in the form of a pedestal with a flock of doves in flight. The Penang Chinese Relief Memorial depicts the transportation volunteers sent to provide relief for China. They served as drivers and mechanics to transport material into China following the blockade of Chinese seaports by Japan. The relief effort is also shown on a mural showing workers building the road between Burma and China and the convoy of trucks.
The Air Itam War Memorial Park was built at a cost EM400,000. The funding came from private donations as well as from the state government.
