Alliance Bank branches in Penang in a larger map
Alliance Bank is a Malaysian bank that has its beginnings as a French-owned financial institution known as
Banque de L'Indochine, which opened its first branch in the country in 1975. In 1982, it became known as Malaysian French Bank Berhad.
Two years later, local company Multi-Purpose Capital Holdings bought a 70% stake in the bank. In 1996, the bank changed its name to Multi-Purpose Bank Berhad. It continued to grow, and by 1998, had 34 branches throughout the country.
A consolidation exercise involving local banks saw the creation of The Alliance Banking Group in 2001, the result of merging seven local financial institutions. The group comprises a number of financial entities under the Alliance brandname, among them Alliance Bank and Alliance Finance, which eventually was merged into Alliance Bank. Today Alliance Bank has a number of branches in Penang Island and Penang Mainland.
