Simon Tan: Ah Mah & Ah Soon Mural

Ah Mah & Ah Soon Mural by Simon TanAh Mah & Ah Soon Mural by Simon Tan (16 April 2013)

"Ah Mah & Ah Soon" (GPS: 5.41268, 100.3398) is the second mural painted by Simon Tan in Chew Jetty, Penang. It depicts a grandmother having a good time with her grandson. The mural graces the wall of a wooden house at the entrance to the jetty. Unlike the "Ah Kong & Ah Mah" mural, which was painted at ground level, the Ah Mah & Ah Soon is one storey up. Thus it is harder to be vandalised.

Artistically, Ah Mah & Ah Soon is inferior to Simon's maiden effort, Ah Kong & Ah Mah. Could it be that he, like Louis Gan, succumbed to pressure brought on by the success of his first mural? Considering this piece was executed in the immediate aftermath of the defacement on Ah Kong & Ah Mah, it could also be that the incident had adversely affected the artist's mood, and hence his artwork.

If it is any consolation, Louis Gan dropped the ball with the hastily completed Children Playing Basketball, but he rebounded with his subsequent piece, Nostalgic Meal Order. In the same note, I expect Ah Mah & Ah Soon to represent a momentary low for Simon Tan, and that he too will rebound after he has fully recovered.
