Antigua and Barbuda is a country comprising two small islands located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to the two major islands, Antigua and Barbuda, the country also includes a numbher of smaller islands such as Great Bird Island, Green Island, Guinea Island, Long Island, Maiden Island and York Island. The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are located in the middle of the Leeward Islands, which are part of the Lesser Antilles.

Antigua and Barbuda measures 440 sq km (170 sq mi). It has a population of 87,000 (2011 estimate) and a total GDP of 1.472 billion (2009 estimate) and a per capita GDP of US$17,308. Antigua and Barbuda attained independence from the United Kingdom on 1 November, 1981. It is part of the Commonwealth Realm, and has Queen Elizabeth II of England as the Queen of Antigua and Barbuda. The capital and biggest city is Saint John's.

Today tourism is the mainstay of the economy of Antigua and Barbuda. The islands have stunningly beautiful white sandy beaches and numerous upscale beach resorts. This is especially true of Antigua. Barbuda on the other hand remains under developed, with limited tourist infrastructure.

Antigua and Barbuda experiences a tropical marine climate. Temperature is quite uniform throughnout the year. The islands are occasional hit by tropical storms and hurricanes, especially between July and October, and also experience occasional droughts.

Planning your visit to Antigua and Barbuda

The main airport is the V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU). It is located in northeastern Antigua. The airport receives direct flights from the United States, Canada, neighboring islands and Europe. Among the airlines flying there includes American Airlines/American Eagle, Continental Airlines, US Airways, Air Canada, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Caribbean Airlines.

A number of cruise ships make their stop at Antigua.
