Barbados is a small island nation in the Caribbean. It is one of the islands of the Lesser Antilles, on the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. Barbados is about 168 km (104 mi) from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and 400 km (250 mi) to the northeast of Trinidad and Tobago. It measures 34 km (21 mi) across and has a width of 23 km (14 mi). Barbados covers 431 sq km (166 sq mi).

Barbados was a Portuguese territorial possession known as Os Barbados until 1625, when it became an English colony, and later British colony. Today it has a population of 280,000 (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Brigetown, accounting for 80,000 of its population.

Barbados is an independent country within the Commonwealth realm. It retains Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State. It is a major tourist destination in the Caribbean and is one of the most developed islands in the region. It has a GDP of US$6.175 billion (2010 estimate) and a per capita GDP of US$14,307 (2010 estimate).

Barbados is tringular and flat. The highest point is Mount Hillaby, at 340 m (1,120 ft). The island is divided into eleven parishes. It enjoys a moderate tropical climate with a wet season from June to November and a dry one from December to May. The island is outside the hurricane belt, and so it is often spared the worst effects of tropical storms and hurricanes.

The Sir Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is the airport serving Barbados. It receives flights from British Airways and Virgin Atlantic among others. From the airport, you can take a bus to Brigetown, Holetown and Speightstown. Taxis are also available to take you directly to your hotel.

Planning your travel within Barbados

The most practical form of transport are the buses. They are plentiful and cheap, enabling you to explore the island quite well. The standard fare is BD$1.50. To go off the beaten path, renting a car is recommended. Rented cars are however quite expensive. Alternatively you can also rent a bike.
