Barrie is a city on the western shore of Lake Simcoe, in southern Ontario, Canada. It spans over 76.99 sq km (29.73 sq mi) and has a population of 136,000 people (2012 estimate) within a metropolitan area of 187,000 people. It is one of the cities within the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the densely populated and highly industrialized subregion of Southern Ontario around the western rim of Lake Ontario.

Barrie traces its history to a settlement established at the foot of the Nine Mile Portage, an ancient transportation route of the native people that has existed before the arrival of Europeans in the area. The settlement was established in 1833, and was named after Royal Navy officer Sir Robert Barrie. It was incorporated in 1837 as a town and reincorporated as a city in 1853.

Today Barrie is a city offering many job opportunities in the technological sector. This has helped make it one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, with a rapid migration of mostly young workforce to take up employment in the area. In order to continue expanding, the city in 2010 absorbed the neighboring town of Innisfil.

Barrie experiences a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold winters. July is the warmest month, when average high temperature rises to 26°C (78.8°F). January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of -12.8°C (9°F). August is the wettest month here, receiving 92.6 mm (3.646 in) of rain.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
