Brampton is a city in Ontario, Canada. It covers 266.71 sq km (102.98 sq mi), and with a population of 524,000 people (2012 estimate), it is the 9th most populous city in Canada. It is also the third largest city in the Greater Toronto Area and one with the highest concentration of ethnic South Asians in Canada, forming 36% of the city's population.
Modern Brampton grew out of a 18th century settlement known as Buffy's Corner. It developed from the junction of Main and Queen streets. There is no clear explanation why it was named Brampton, except that it was the choice of land developer John Elliott who laid out the settlement in 1834. Since then, it has been incorporated three times, as a village in 1853, as a town in 1873 and as a city in 1974.
Brampton's transformation from town to city was due to the rapid development of the Toronto metropolitan area, necessitating the creation of a satellite community. In the metamorphosis, it swallowed up existing townships such as Chinguacousy and Toronto Gore. It also annexed Bramalea when it received city status in 1974.
Today Brampton serves as both a bedroom community to Toronto as well as an employment destination of its own standing. It is home to a number of major companies including the Chrysler Canada assembly plant and a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
