Brampton is a city in Ontario, Canada. It covers 266.71 sq km (102.98 sq mi), and with a population of 524,000 people (2012 estimate), it is the 9th most populous city in Canada. It is also the third largest city in the Greater Toronto Area and one with the highest concentration of ethnic South Asians in Canada, forming 36% of the city's population.

Modern Brampton grew out of a 18th century settlement known as Buffy's Corner. It developed from the junction of Main and Queen streets. There is no clear explanation why it was named Brampton, except that it was the choice of land developer John Elliott who laid out the settlement in 1834. Since then, it has been incorporated three times, as a village in 1853, as a town in 1873 and as a city in 1974. Brampton's transformation from town to city was due to the rapid development of the Toronto metropolitan area, necessitating the creation of a satellite community. In the metamorphosis, it swallowed up existing townships such as Chinguacousy and Toronto Gore. It also annexed Bramalea when it received city status in 1974.

Today Brampton serves as both a bedroom community to Toronto as well as an employment destination of its own standing. It is home to a number of major companies including the Chrysler Canada assembly plant and a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
