Burnaby is the second most populous city in British Columbia, Canada, after Vancouver and Surrey. It covers 90.61 sq km (34.98 sq mi) and has a population of 223,000 people (2012 estimate). It is also the 20th most populous city in the country.
Burnaby was named after explorer Robert Burnaby, who surveyed the area in 1859. Its proximity to Vancouver and New Westminster helped fuel its growth in its early decades. It originally served as farm country serving the nearby cities. Today it has developed into an urban area. It has the largest shopping mall in British Columbia, the Metropolis at Metrotown.
