Chicoutimi is one of the three boroughs of Saguenay, in Quebec. It was a separate city until 2002, when it was annexed into Saguenay. It has a population of 59,764 people during the 2001 census, the last time it was counted as a separate city.
Chicoutimi dates back to 1676 when French fur traders set up an outpost there. It was incorporated as a city in 1842. The city only began to develop rapidly after 1893, following the completion of a railway line linking it to Roberval. This allowed the transporation of pulp produced by Chicoutimi.
In 1976, Chicoutimi annexed its neighboring towns of Chicoutimi-Nord and Rivière-du-Moulin. Then in 2002, Chicoutimi itself along with Jonquière and La Baie among others, were annexed to Saguenay, becoming one of the three boroughs of the city.
