Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick, Canada. It covers 130.68 sq km (50.46 sq mi) and has a 56,000 people (2012 estimate). This makes it the third largest city in New Brunswick behind Saint John and Moncton.
Before the arrival of Europeans in the area, the Fredericton area was used by the Mi'kmaq and Maliseet tribes of First Nations people for seasonal farming. The French arrived in the area in the late 17th century. They later built Fort Nashwaak on the northern bank of the Saint John River. In 1696, in retaliation to an offensive by Fort Nashwaak, the settlers of New England attacked the fort, causing it to be destroyed and eventually abandoned.
In 1732, Acadians fleeing British invasion of Nova Scotia established the settlement of Pointe-Sainte-Anne. However the British captured it in 1759, and burned the Acadian settlement to the ground.
The present city of Fredericton, built on the site of Pointe-Sainte-Anne, dates to 1784, after New Brunswick became a separate colony from Nova Scotia. It was originally named Frederick's Town, in honor of the second son of King George III, Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York. But within a year the name was shortened to Fredericton, when it was selected to be the new provincial capital of New Brunswick.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
