Kelowna is a city in Okanagan Valley, in south central British Columbia, Canada. It spans an area of 211.69 sq km (81.73 sq mi). With a population of 117,000 people (2012 estimate), it is the 22nd largest city in Canada.
Kelowna is located on Okanagan Lake. Its name means "grizzly bear" in the Okanagan language. One of the first Europeans to reach the area was Father Charles M Pandosy, a Roman Catholic missionary. He arrived in 1859 and proceeded to establish a settlement there. The town was incorporated in 1905.
Kelowna experiences a semi-arid climate. Warmest month is July, when average high temperature rises to 27.6°C (81.7°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low drops to -7.4°C (18.7°F). Annual precipitation is 380.5 mm (14.98 in), with June being the wettest month.
