Kingston is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It covers 450.39 sq km (173.9 sq mi) and has a population of 123,000 people (2012 estimate). As many of its historic buildings were built of local limestone, Kingston is often nicknamed the Limestone City.
The Kingston area has inhabited by the Mississaugas tribe of First nations people when the French arrived in the 17th century. They built Fort Cataraqui, which was later renamed Fort Frontenac. In 1758, the British captured the fort. A few decades later, the town became a center for refugees fleeing the American Revolutionary War.
In 1787, Cataraqui was renamed King's Town, shortened the following year to Kingston. In 1832, the
Rideau Canal was built, with Kingston on its entrance to Lake Ontario. It was incorporated as a town in 1838, when it was the largest town in Upper Canada. Then in 1846 it was incorporated as a city.
Kingston served as the first capital of the Province of Canada from 1841 to 1844. The site where the first Parliament of the United Canadas was held is today the Kingston General Hospital. The city of Kingston has nearly 700 properties listed as of heritage value, including 20 National Historic Sites of Canada.
