Kingston is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It covers 450.39 sq km (173.9 sq mi) and has a population of 123,000 people (2012 estimate). As many of its historic buildings were built of local limestone, Kingston is often nicknamed the Limestone City.
The Kingston area has inhabited by the Mississaugas tribe of First nations people when the French arrived in the 17th century. They built Fort Cataraqui, which was later renamed Fort Frontenac. In 1758, the British captured the fort. A few decades later, the town became a center for refugees fleeing the American Revolutionary War.
In 1787, Cataraqui was renamed King's Town, shortened the following year to Kingston. In 1832, the Rideau Canal was built, with Kingston on its entrance to Lake Ontario. It was incorporated as a town in 1838, when it was the largest town in Upper Canada. Then in 1846 it was incorporated as a city.
Kingston served as the first capital of the Province of Canada from 1841 to 1844. The site where the first Parliament of the United Canadas was held is today the Kingston General Hospital. The city of Kingston has nearly 700 properties listed as of heritage value, including 20 National Historic Sites of Canada.
Kingston is on Highway 401, so it is easy to reach from Ottawa, Syracuse, Toronto and Montreal. There are also train services from Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
