Markham is a town in Southern Ontario, Canada. It is within the Regional Municipality of York, in the Greater Toronto Area. The town covers 212.47 sq km (82.04 sq mi) and has a population of 302,000 people (2012 estimate). Markham is the fourth largest city in the Greater Toronto Area behind Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton.
The history of Markham goes back to 1793, when German pioneer William Berczy led a group of German families from Upstate New York to settle there. Each family was to be given a tract of land, but due to lack of roads in the area, the majority ended up living in York (present-day Toronto), and the intended town, called German Mills, became a ghost town.
After the Germans came a group of Pennsylvania Dutch settlers. They renamed the settlement Reesorville, after one of them, Mennonite settler Joseph Reesor. In 1825, Reesorville was renamed once more, to Markham, in honor of the Archbishop of York, William Markham.
Today the economy of Markham is supported mostly by business services. The largest employer is IBM. Other multinational having a presence in Markham include American Express, Advanced Micro Devices, Johnson & Johnson, Apple and Motorola.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
