Mississauga is a city to the southwest of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. It covers 288.42 sq km (111.36 sq mi) and has a population of 713,000 people (2012 estimate).
Mississauga benefited from its proximity to Toronto. It developed as a suburb to Toronto, becoming today the sixth most populous municipality in Canada. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Iroquoian- and Algonquian-speaking tribes of First Nations people when French traders arrived in the early 17th century. Coming also to settle in the area were the Mississaugas tribe which by the 18th century had driven out the Iroquois.
Modern Mississauga began in 1805, when officials from the city of York (today Toronto) brought land from the Mississaugas. They created the Toronto Township out of land from the existing villages of Lakeview, Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Lorne Park, Port Credit, Sheridan and Summerville. The early European settlers were Loyalists who moved out of the United States following the American Revolutionary War. They received land grants from the British government in the area.
Construction of railway lines into the Mississauga area began in 1873. At that time, it was still called the Toronto Township. The area developed with sawmills and farmland. In 1937 the Malton Airport began operations. It would later become Canada's busiest airport, and renamed the Toronto Pearson International Airport.
In 1968 the various settlements within Toronto Township were merged to form the Town of Mississauga. During that period, the towns of Port Credit and Streetsville became islands surrounded by the Town of Mississauga. They were eventually annexed when Mississauga was reincorporated as a city in 1974.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
