Newmarket is a town in York Region, in Ontario, Canada. It is located to the north of Toronto, within the Greater Toronto Area. It spans over 38.33 sq km (14.8 sq mi) and has a population of 80,000 people (2012 estimate).
Being on the banks of the Holland River, Newmarket is on the Toronto Carrying-Place Trail, a portage route used by the indigenous people even before the arrival of Europeans. Among the first Europeans to explore the area was a Quaker named Timothy Rogers in 1800. He returned the following year with a few Quaker families who decided to leave Vermont and Pennsylvania, disturbed by the lost of peace from the American Revolution.
The settlement began in earnest in 1801, with the construction of a mill, a tannery and the first store in town. At that time, the site was simply called Upper Yonge Street. It would only be given its present name Newmarket later, when a bustling market took shape in the downtown area. Newmarket was incorporated as a village in 1857 and reincorporated as a town in 1880.
