Sudbury is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is known officially as Greater Sudbury, an administrative division created in 2001 out of the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury. It covers3,200.56 sq km (1,235.74 sq mi) and has a population of 160,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the largest city in Ontario in terms of area, and the 24th largest metropolitan area in Canada.
Greater Sudbury is unique as it refers to a single city, not a conurbation such as Greater Toronto. It also has an official name in French, Grand-Sudbury. However the most common name for the city is simply Sudbury.
The history of Sudbury goes back to 1883, when French Jesuit priests established a mission in the area called Sainte-Anne-des-Pins. That same year the Canadian Pacific Railway constructed its line through the area, and in the process of blasting, revealed rich nickel-copper ore. This led to mining activities being carried out. The community was then renmaed Sudbury, after Sudbury, Suffolk, the hometown of the Canadian Pacific Railway commissioner James Worthington's wife.
The fortunes of Sudbury followed the price of nickel. Increased demands for nickle during the First World War lifted its economy. Similarly it was able to recover from the Great Depression faster than most other cities in North America due to an increased demand for nickel in the 1930s. Sudbury was incorporated as a town in 1893 and reincorporated as a city in 1930. Today mining has decreased and the city's economy is now diversified into finance, business, tourism and health care, among others.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
