Thompson is a city at the heart of the province of Manitoba, Canada, though geographically it is considered part of northern Manitoba. The city spans over 17.18 sq km (6.63 sq mi) and has a population of 13,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of European presence in the Thompson area began with surveys conducted in 1896. The city itself dates to 1956. It was established after minerals were discovered in the area and mining exploration were started. Thompson was a planned community named after John F. Thompson, the chairman of the International Nickel Company or Inco, which today is known as Vale Inco.
Mining activities drove the population of Thompson to as high as 26,000 before the 1970s recession brought the numbers down. It was incorporated as a town in 1967, in conjunction with Canada's Centennial Anniversary. Three years later it was incorporated as a city, during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
Today mining remains the main activity in Thompson. It is also the site for the Global Aerospace Centre for Icing and Environment Research. The city experiences a subarctic climate with long, cold winters and short, warm summers.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
