Whistler is a resort town in British Columbia, Canada. It covers 240.4 sq km (92.82 sq mi) and has a permanent population of around 10,000 people (2012 estimate), with an even higher "transient" population of workers usually from outside the province.

Whistler is located 670 m (2,200 ft) above sea level, within a valley between the headwaters of the Green River and the upper-middle reaches of the Cheakamus. The area was surveyed by the Royal Navy in the 1860s. The call of the hoary marmot provided a ready name of Whistler to the site.

Whistler began to develop as a ski resort in 1962, when four Vancouver businessmen decided on developing it to bid for the 1968 Winter Olympics. However then it was offered the opportunity to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, it turned it down, as the local government did not welcome the idea. Whistler eventually got the chance to host the Winter Olympics when it was held in Vancouver in 2010.

Visiting Whistler

The Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99) connects Whisler to Vancouver in the south. There are Greyhound Canada buses from Vancouver as well as buses by Pacific Coach, Snowbus and Perimeter Bus.
