Windsor is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Located on the southern bank of the Detroit River across from the city of Detroit, Michigan, Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada. It covers 146.91 sq km (56.72 sq mi) and has a population of 211,000 people (2012 estimate).
The French were the first European to explore the area around Windsor around 1749, where they established a farming village. It is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in Canada west of Montreal. It was originally called Petite Côte, meaning "Little Coast", to differentiate it from the larger coast on the Detroit side of the River.

The predominantly French-speaking town came under British control at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1794, after the American Revolution, the British established the settlement of Sandwich in the area. The settlement was later renamed Windsor, after the town in Berkshire, England, though Sandwich remains as a neighborhood within Windsor. Today Sandwich has some of the oldest buildings in the city.
Its position in proximity to Detroit makes Windsor today one of Canada's major automobile manufacturing centres rivalling Oshawa. Chrysler Canada has its headquarters here, and a Chrysler assembly plant in Windsor produces the Chrysler minivan.
