Yarmouth is a small fishing town in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. It covers 10.56 sq km (4.08 sq mi) and has a population of 6,700 people (2012 estimate). The town is renowned for having the largest lobster fishing ground in the world.

Earliest European presence in Yarmouth is said to goes back to Leif Ericson, the 10th century Viking explorer. This is based on the discovery of a runic stone in the nearby village of Overton in 1812, today preserved at the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives.

The first recorded European to visit the area was French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604. At that time, the area was inhabited by indigenous people of the Mi'kmaq Nation. The natives called the site Keespongwitk, meaning Land's End. Champlain however established a French fishing village here, called Cape Fourchu.

The Conquest of Acadia in 1710 ejected the French-speaking population from the area. Then in 1759, the site was occupied by English-speaking settlers from the town of Yarmouth, Massachusetts. They are said to have named the site Yarmouth as well. Then in 1767 the exiled Acadians returned, followed by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolutionary War in 1785.

Today the economy of Yarmouth is based on the fishing industry as well as tourism.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
