Los Katíos World Heritage Site

Los Katíos National Park is a national park in Colombia. It covers an area of 278 square miles, equivalent to 72,000 hectars, on the northwestern part of Colombia, and is contiguous to Darién National Park in Panama.

Los Katíos National Park includes low hills, forests and humid plains. The park has an outstanding diversity of flora and fauna, and is also the home of many endemic plants and endangered animals. Within an area which is less than 1% of Colombia, Los Katíos National Park contains 25% of all the bird species found in the country.

In recognition of its outstanding value to humanity, Los Katíos National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 18th session of the World Heritage Committee which was held in Phuket, Thailand, from 12th to the 17th of December, 1994.

List of World Heritage in Danger

Los Katíos National Park was placed on the list of World Heritage in Danger in 2009. This is due to the extreme concern of the World Heritage Committee over the existing and potential threats to the Outstanding Universal Value of the national park as described in the state of conservation report submitted by the government of Colombia.

The government of Colombia had requested the inscription of Los Katíos National Park in the List of World Heritage in Danger so as to call local as well as international attention to it, and get help to address the threats.

Los Katíos National Park is one of the three sites placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2009. The other two are the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
