Heredia was founded in 1705 by settlers relocating from Cartago. The area has been inhabited by the Huetares tribe before the arrival of the Spaniards. The site was known as Alvirilla. A few years later, the settlers relocated to another nearby site called Cubujuquí.

In 1736 it received its parish church, the Iglesia de la Inmaculada. Then in 1763, it received its first school, run by the church. In 1764, Cubujuquí was granted town status, and it changed its name to Heredia, in honor of President Alonso Fernández de Heredia.

The Flores family dominated the political scene in Heredia from the turn of the 19th century through much of the 20th century. This has caused tourism campaigns to market the city as Ciudad de las Flores, meaning City of Flowers, even though the city is not particularly noted for any particular blossoms.

Visiting Heredia

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
