Most of the inhabitants of Puerto Limón are the descendants of laborers who worked on the railway connecting it with San José. The coast was a haven for pirates such as Edward Mansvelt, who arrived there in 1666. It remained largely undeveloped until 1854, when the town was founded by Philipp J.J. Valentini. Today the city has an impressive collection of Caribbean-style buildings from the 19th century.
