Negril is a small town on the westernmost tip of Jamaica. It spreads across the parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover, and has a population of just over 3,000 people (2011 estimate). Today it is one of the three top tourist destinations in Jamaica, on account of its excellent beaches.

Negril has some four miles of perfect-white sandy beaches, skirted by the Norman Manley Boulevard. A sea cliff lined the beach. The area is today developed with hotels and beach resorts.

Negril dates back as early as 1494, to the dawn of Europeans in the New World. It was originally called Negrillo, but shortened later to Negril. It remained little more than a sparsely inhabited beach area in western Jamaica. It was only in the mid to late 20th century that the beaches of Negril were discovered for their tourism potential, attracting a host of hotels to the area.

The sea off Negril is covered with beautiful coral reefs visible in the crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Visiting Negril

Take a van or minibus from Montego Bay. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Negril.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
