Cancún is a resort city in the state of Quintana Roo, in the Yucatán Peninsula, in Mexico. The city is one of the fastest growing in Mexico, with a population of over 700,000 (2011 estimate).
Cancún was earmarked for tourist development in the early 1970's. At that time, the Mexican government had to finance the construction of the first nine hotels, as investors were unwilling to put money on the then unknown tourist destination.

The main draw of Cancún is its beautiful white-sand beaches. There are some small Mayan archaeological site in the area that gives Cancun an additional boost. To visit the major sites which are further away, Chichén Itzá for example, you should inquire with your hotel on availability of day excursion packages.
Visiting Cancún
The Cancún International Airport (CUN) is today the second busiest airport in Mexico. The airport receives flights from major cities of the Americas as well as from Europe. Arriving at the airport, you can take a bus to the ADO bus station or to Playa del Carmen. If you have your hotels booked, you can take the transfer service between the airport and your hotel. The price is fixed and not negotiable. Ignore touts attempting to sell you their transportation options.
Exploring Cancún
When in Cancún, your options include taking the bus or the taxi. Both are quite plentiful. The buses are of course the cheaper option. As this is a tourist resort, you will find that the bus drivers here are very courteous and helpful. Always be mindful of pickpockets however.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
