Chinandega is a city on the western part of Nicaragua. It covers 686.6 sq km (265.1 sq mi) and has a municipality population of 152,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is at a heart of a farming region producing, among others, oils, flour, peanuts, shrimp and sugarcane.
Chinandega is just 20 km (12 mi) from the Pacific Ocean. It experiences a humid, tropical climate. The city is within a department that has nice beaches, historic towns and even the tallest volcano in Nicaragua.
Chinandega dates back to the 17th century, but remained a small village until the past century. Its good location within a fertile plain helped it improve its position as a commercial center. It was named as a settlement in 1796, and received town status in 1836.

You can reach Chinandega by taking a bus or mini bus from the Huembes Market area in Managua.
Places of Interest in Chinandega
- Church of El Calvario Parish
The Calvary Parish Church dates back to 1874. It was destroyed by the 1885 earthquake that had to be rebuilt after that. Its patron is the Holy Name of Jesus, whose feast day is the last Sunday of January.
- Church of Our Lady Santa Ana
A beautiful Romanesque-style church that dates to the 18th century. It was damaged by the earthquake of 1885 and subsequently rebuilt to its present form.
- Church of St Anthony (Iglesia San Antonio)
Church associated with the local aristocracy, it is often the venue of weddings of the upper crust of the local society.
