The arrival of Europeans in the 16th century led to the founding of Asunción in 1537. From the beginning the city was a center for Spanish colonial activities, being one of the early sites for Jesuit missions and settlements.
On 15 May, 1811, Paraguay overthrew its Spanish colonial masters and declared independence. What followed thereafter was a history of political instability and regular conflicts with its neighbors. It was defeated by the combined forces of Argentina, Brazil and Urugual in the War of Triple Alliance, one of the bloodiest battles in South American history. On the other hand it won the Chaco War against Bolivia in 1930.
The political landscape of Paraguay is one of tubulence. It had thirty-one presidents between 1904 and 1954, the majority overthrown. Between 1954 and 1989, Paraguay was under the iron fist of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner, who was also eventually overthrown.
Despite its wealth of natural resources, Paraguay remains today the second poorest country in South America.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
