Asunción is the capital and largest city in Paraguay. It covers 117 sq km and has a population of 522,000 people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 2 million people. It is located on the left bank of the Paraguay River, near the confluence with the Pilcomayo River.

Asunción experiences a tropical savanna climate bordering on the humid subtropical climate. It has a short dry season which lasts just one month, June, while the rest of the year is hot, humit and wet. January is the hottest month, when the average high temperature rises to 34°C (93°F). June and July are the coldest month, with average low temperature of 12°C (54°F).

Asunción was founded by Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa in 1537, making it one of the oldest cities in South America. A few years later, the city received an influxed of Spanish immigrants who fled Buenos Aires, which was attacked by natives.

In 1731, the locals in Asunción under José de Antequera y Castro staged an uprising against Spanish rule. Although it was unsuccessful, it ignited nationalism among the locals, who comprised mostly the criollos, mestizos and natives.

Independence eventually came to Paraguay in 1811 when the Spanish Governor was ambushed and forced to surrender. The plot was planned at the home of Juana María de Lara. That house in Asunción is today known as Casa de la Independencia.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
