Ciudad del Este is a city on the eastern part of Paraguay, near the border with Brazil. The name Ciudad del Este means "City of the East", as it is one of the easternmost major cities in Paraguay. Covering 104 sq km (40.2 sq mi), it has a population of 321,000 people (2011 estimate), making it the second most populous city in the country.
Ciudad del Este was founded in 1957. Although a relatively young city, it has undergone name change quite a number of times. Originally it was known as Puerto Flor de Lis. Then it was renamed Puerto Presidente Stroessner, in honor of the Paraguay president Alfredo Stroessner. It was renamed to Ciudad del Este in 1989.
Ciudad has a sizable Asian community comprising Taiwanese, Koreans, Lebanese and Iranians. As a result, it is one of the few cities in South America with a good number of mosques and temples. The city is near to Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, linked by the Friendshop Bridge.
