Abilene experiences a climate between the humid subtropical and the semi-arid steppe. July is the hottest month, when the average high temperature rises to 95.2°F (35.1°C). On the other hand, average low temperature for January drops to 30.7°F (-0.7°C). September is the wettest month, receiving 3.2 in (81.5 mm) of precipitation.

Abilene was founded as a stock shipping point by cattlemen in 1881. It was named after Abilene, Kansas, which was the original end point of the Chisholm Trail. The person who named it was Clabe Merchant, regarded as the father of Abilene. He was the landowner in the area. Lots were sold to new settlers and the city was incorporated as a town in 1882.

There are three universities in Abilene namely Hardin-Simmons University (founded as Simmons College in 1891), Abilene Christian University (founded as Childers Classical Institute in 1906) and McMurry University (founded as McMurry College in 1923). In recent years it also attracted Cisco Junior College and Texas State Technical College to set up branch campuses in the city.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
