Ames, right in the heart of Iowa, is the 9th most populous city in the state. It covers 21.58 sq mi (55.9 sq km) and has a population of 60,000 people (2011 estimate). It is the largest city in Story County but not the county seat, which is the city of Nevada 8 miles to the east.

Ames was founded in 1864 as a train station of the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad. It was named after US Congressman Oakes Ames who was influential in getting the railroad built. It experiences a humid continental climate. July is the warmest month here, when the average high temperature rises to 84°F (29°C). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 10°F (-12°C). June is the wettest month in Ames, receiving 5.01 in (127.3 mm) of rainfall.

Ames today is a modern city and home to the Iowa State University. It is regarded as the birthplace of the world's first electronic digital computer, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, conceived in 1937.

Visiting Ames

Interstate 35 passes to the east of Ames. If you're using this highway, take exit 113 and continue west on 13th Street. Turning south at Clark Avenue takes you to downtown Ames.

    Museum within the Iowa State University with a collection of historical sketches and models of the university campus buildings.

  3. Farm House Museum
    Museum housed in the oldest building on the ISU campus. It showcases the model farm, which was the earliest building of the university.
