Ankeny is a small city in Polk County, Iowa. It covers 29.1 sq mi (75 sq km) and has a population of 46,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is within the Des Moines metropolitan area, to the north of downtown Des Moines.
Ankeny was founded by John Ankeny in 1875. In the early years, it was a coal mining town. Gold was also discovered in the area but was never mined. During the Second World War it had an ammunition plant which was later purchased by Deere & Co and converted.

Take Interstate 35 north out of Des Moines until Exit 92 and continue west of 1st Street to reach Ankeny.
