Astoria is a small city in Clatsop County, in northwestern Oregon. It covers 10.6 sq mi (27.5 sq km) and has a population approaching 10,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is on the southern shore of the Columbia River
Astoria experiences a marine west coast climate. Summers are cool while winters are mild. August is the warmest month, with average high temperature of 68.3°F (20.2°C). January is the coldest month, when average low temperature drops to 36.7°F (2.6°C). Astoria receives a lot of rain particularly from November to January. The wettest month is November, which receives 10.5 in (266.7 mm) of rain.
The earliest Europeans to arrive in the Astoria area was the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which wintered at Fort Clatsop, a log structure in the Astoria area in 1805-06. Then in 1810, John Jacob Astor (of Waldorf-Astoria family) sent the Astor Expedition that established Fort Astoria for his Pacific Fur Company. The fur company and fort were a failed business venture, and Astor sold it to the British in 1813.
British occupation of the area continued until the Oregon Treaty of 1846, in which Britain ceded all rights south of the 49th parallel south to the United States. The settlement around Fort Astoria, now known simply as Astoria, grew into a port town.
Today Astoria is a popular tourist destination with a developing arts and cultural scene.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
